20 June 2008 To Stavanger, Norway

It rained hard all night. I decided to abandon Plan B, a longer inland, 6 ferry, route to Stavanger. Instead I took a more direct route to today’s destination. The weather today was wet but better than yesterday. Again the scenery was beautiful but there was no safe place to stop the car to look or take pictures. I missed ferry #1 by minutes. Had to wait only 30min for the next. I was just on time to catch ferry #2. There were 3 under water tunnels linking the islands. Odd that the drivers slow down for the down slope, yet speed up on the up slope. I’ve observed that Norwegians don’t do turning circles well. They tend to stop instead of slow & yield to traffic. I guess they are too polite. They are the opposite of Italian drivers. I managed to find my hotel which was located near the Stavanger water front & old town. After I checked in, I took a walk around the old town. There were several surprises. First, as I was walking around taking photos, I caught a glimpse of a huge cruise ship. It was the Cunard Lines Queen Victoria ship. It later quietly slipped away to sea. Later as I approached the town square, there was a crowd of people gathering. I arrived in time to watch the Norwegian Military Band & drill core. After that there was a performance by a high school band from Africa. They were fantastic.
