When I visited Bern, Switzerland, I noticed people driving around with various national flags attached to their cars. I also saw flags hanging from the windows of buildings. As I continued my travels in Europe, I again saw these flags displayed in similar fashion in other parts of Europe. Eventually I realized that there was some sort of football championships (we call it soccer) going on.

8 June, 2008: A SUNDAY DRIVE TO THE MOUNTAINS.
Today, I left Italy as I drove north into a place in the Alps referred to as the “Dolomites”. In 1993, I had been in this area during my first bicycle trip in Europe. I got a room at Gosthof Haidenhof, with a great view of the mountains in Lienz, Austria.

7 June 2008: MI AMICO
In 1995 & 1998, I toured Italy by bicycle. During each trip I spent a weekend with my Italian friend Piero. Over the last 10 years, I had lost contact with him. Prior to leaving for my driving tour of Europe, we reconnected by e-mail. We made arrangements to meet to spend day together. As usual, Piero again became the perfect tour guide of interesting places near his town of Meldola. First we went to Bertinoro, where we walked around this beautiful small Emilia Romagna town. After talking to some friends & making few phone calls, he found me a room at the Hotel Panorama. My room had a superb view of the beautiful Italian scenery. Later we buzzed around in his Fiat visiting the two hill towns of Longiano & Roncofreddo. Later that evening I was invited by Piero to dine with some of his friends at a local restorante. It was a memorable finish to a great Saturday visit in Italy. Thank you Piero, for sharing your friends with me.
