17 June 2008 Voyage to Norway
I left Alborg for the second time to take the ferry boat to Norway. While searching for a gas station in Hirtshals, I discovered a light house & a view of the North Sea. I arrived at the ferry landing about an hour before the 12:15 departure time. The ferry arrived in Kristiansand, Norway at 4pm. The rugged coast along my drive reminded me of the coast of Maine. After negotiating the last 10 miles (150 mile trip) on narrow winding Norwegian country roads, I arrived at the Dalsroa Hotel after 8pm. I talked to Truls, the owner of the hotel. He explained that there was once a WW2 German POW camp located very close to the hotel. He also recommended a route I should take tomorrow for my trip north to see the Fjords of Norway.

16 June 2008 Still in Denmark
Today started out like any other day. I ate breakfast, packed my luggage & loaded the car. I drove away from the ZZZleep Hotel (inexpensive Danish hotel chain) thinking that I would never come back. Well, I’m still here in Alborg. My plan for today was to take the ferry north across the sea to Norway. My Volvo does float like a boat, so I have to stay in Denmark for 1 more day. The 12:15 boat does not run on Monday & the only one to leave Hirtshals, Denmark was full & scheduled to leave at 8 pm. Taking 4 hours to get to Noeway, meant arriving there at about midnight. Let’s see my hotel is a 200 mile drive on small twisting roads. Maybe I could have made by 5am. Well I stewed in the car thinking of my options. I decided to eat the first motel cost (too late to cancel without a penalty charge) & take the 12:15 boat tomorrow. I did some calculations & route planning back at the ZZZleep Hotel. I spent a good part of the afternoon making new hotel reservations. The good news is that I was able to get hotels in Bergen & Stavanger at a rate cheaper than I could have several days ago. In fact, I couldn’t book any hotels in these places several days ago. So I’m all set to go again tomorrow. Wish me luck. I walked to the near by gas station where I was supposed to find a phone & purchase a Danish phone card (no phones at the low cost hotel) to call & cancel two of the remaining hotel reservations. No luck there. Fortunately a Mr Anderson overheard my converstion & offered me the use of his cell phone to call the Norway hotels. Thank you very much Henrik.

Summer Solstice
Summer solstice, the day with the longest period of daylight occurs on June 21. As that date becomes closer, I'm also traveling north. Both circumstances lead my being in a place where the daylight lasts longer through the length of the day. As I sit hear typing this message, it's 10pm & it's still light outside. I woke up this morning at 5am to bright morning daylight. It's an interesting phenomenon.
Beautiful Denmark
A more direct drive from Juelisminde to Alborg could have been a quick drive on the Danish motorway. Instead, I decided to take a meandering route on local roads through the Denmark countryside. The weather was cool with a mix of sunshine & showers. The scenery was a mix of marshland, forests & fields.
