June 16, 2009 GALWAY to WESTPORT

Of significance to me, today we entered County Mayo, the birth place of my Irish Grandmother. She left Ireland in 1910 from Westport at the age of 19. I believe I’m her only descendent to return to Ireland since she emigrated to the USA.

Today we rode the bus & saw Cong Abbey, Ashford Castle, Glebe Stone Circle, Lough Corrib, Leenane, the BOG, Kylemore Abbey, Famine Walk Memorial. Doo Lough, the Coffin ship sculpture at the National Famine Memorial, Clew Bay & Westport. Let’s go look at the pictures.

Some scenes from the "Quiet Man" man movie were shot at this cottage & the surrounding area.

A short walk from the Cong Abbey is the Victorian era Ashford Castle. Although built around an old Norman Tower, it’s not a real castle, but a very large residence now owned by the Guiness family (Guiness Beer).
