June 10, 2009. KINSALE & CHARLES FORT

Blessed with beautiful weather, we began our day in Kinsale with a Guided walking tour. Talking about Irish history, Don Herlihy lead our walk through this “Tidy Town”. In Ireland there is the “Tidy town” program, whereby like-sized communities compete for recognition for being neat & clean. Kinsale has won this honor several times in the past. Later in the day we were transported by bus for a tour of the 17th century Charles Fort, a Star shaped fort built to defend the natural harbor at Kinsale. Additional defense of the harbor was provided by James Fort on the opposing shore. Some of us took the opportunity to take the scenic walk back to town. Not far from Kinsale, the Passenger ship Lusitannia was sunk by a German U-boat in 1915. An event which influenced the USA to enter WW1.
