Today, I drove the first day of a planned 8 day southward loop through California & Nevada. Again, my chosen route will include a variety of scenery including mountains, desert & coast. I started late but arrived in Carson City, NV (again) well before sunset. This time I will head south from Carson city. The highlights on today’s drive, included rolling hills of the gold country, across the forested Sierra Nevada Mountains & into the Nevada desert. This time I took Hwy 50 over the mountains by way of the always beautiful Lake Tahoe.

I’ve driven home from Phoenix so many times, perhaps I can do it in my sleep. No, I stop & rest my eyes whenever I feel tired. This time I decided to stop a few times to see things of interest. On this drive home, stopped to see Shasta Dam & the Sundial Bridge in Redding, CA. While driving south in the Sacramento Valley, I decided to get a closer look at the Sutter Buttes, A mountain in the middle of the vast flatness of the California Central Valley. So I took a detour from I-5 at Maxwell and drove east through acres of farm land towards Yuba City. On a clear day, the Sutter Buttes are difficult to miss.
It’s been a long & enjoyable journey.

Rest Day
I Spend a day in Phoenix, OR at my Aunt Jerry’s house. I had a wonderful visit with my Aunt. I’ve been traveling north to Phoenix for a visit to my Aunt & Uncle for many years now. I usually drive up here twice a year. It was good to take a break from the driving. My drive home tomorrow will be the longest drive (miles wise) of this trip. I took a walk in downtown Phoenix (Oregon, not Arizona). I saw the oldest house, which was recently damaged by fire. The old Phoenix Pioneer Cemetery here has graves of families who have lived here since the first Pioneers arrived here in the 1840’s. The oldest person I found was born in 1809. I also went shopping & bought a new digital camera. Another Canon, similar, but with some extra features. I like it because it has an optical view finder & uses 2 AA batteries which can be found just about every where I travel .

Digital Camera Rant #1
Each brand of digital camera seems to have it’s own unique battery. Most manufacturers of digital cameras, require one of several unique types of batteries available for their various models of cameras. There does not seem to be a standard for batteries in this industry. While cameras which use AA batteries may not be quite as compact as others, at least the power source is readily available wherever you go. Perhaps it's about money. Judging by the cost to purchase one of these unique batteries, it's another source of income for these companies.
Digital Camera Rant #2
While it’s nice that the viewing screens on digital cameras are larger now, they all seem to have a reflective surface. They are next to useless in bright outdoor lighting situations. When I use the screen to compose a shot outdoors, all I can see is my face being reflected off the view screen. Canon is one of the few Digital camera makers that still offers an optical view finder on some of their models. Thumbs up to Canon. The same problem exists with shinny reflective laptop screens. But that’s another, but similar rant.
